Born and brought up in Darjeeling, schooled at Mount Hermon School Mr. Sunirmal Chakravarthi went on to graduate from St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta with an Honours Degree in English and did his post-graduation from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, before completing his B.Ed. from North Bengal University.
Mr. Chakravarthi began his professional life as a teacher at St. Paul’s School, Darjeeling in 1987 and went on to serve the school as a Senior Master from 1997 till 2005. He joined La Martiniere School, Calcutta as Principal in January 2006 and retired after a long and illustrious career in 2015. He describes himself as a “teacher by choice who became a Principal by accident.”
These days he is happily spending his retirement among family and friends in Darjeeling, but remains connected with Schools in an advisory capacity and is on the Board of Management of several schools. A published author and editor of several books, his latest publication is called ‘Cambridge Connect’ an English Language series published by Cambridge University Press.
In 1997 Mr. Chakravarthi led a Group Study Exchange Team of young professionals to Swede. He is a Life Member of the Indian Red Cross Society and the Darjeeling District Sports Association and former President of the Rotary Club of Darjeeling An avid reader, trekker, traveler and sports enthusiast, his latest passion is what he calls ‘re-discovering the country by road.’
